Project Scope
Epigroup were commissioned by the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative to document ‘A Day in the Life’ of a the Rock Lobster Fishermen of Western Australia through video production and photography. The brief was to produce a quintessentially Australian story focusing on the people and places that make the lobster fishing industry unique.
The material is to be utilised in the launch of the GFC’s brand new website, and be premiered at the launch of their new global export depot in Perth in front of 500 customers, members and distinguished guests including the WA minister for fisheries. Additional content is to be rolled out over a period of time to bolster the GFC’s marketing presence.
Services and Solutions Provided
From end-to-end, the production was treated as a documentary and photo-journalism exercise. This meant spending time with the client to scratch the surface, ask questions and slowly build an understanding history and culture of the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-op and it’s members. Through this process we were able to flesh out and identify the key themes, points of interest and focus points that would help make for a much more productive shoot.
Over the course of two weeks the team, led by director James Teakle, set out on the road and spent a day with a handful of lobster fishermen at locations including Kalbarri, the Abrolhos Islands, Dongara, Leeman and Mandurah. Our aim was to not ‘over-produce’ the outcome, but to simply be there to observe the subject’s going about their business, through the inquisitive lens of our cameras. All interviews were intentionally casual and captured ‘on-the-fly’ when the time felt right. The result is a 12 minute documentary and accompanying library of 400 images.
